IIT Delhi announces mental health reforms after student’s death; plans more counsellors and grievance ombudsperson

IIT Delhi has announced institutional reforms to strengthen campus mental health services and student welfare following the death of student Rishikesh Kumar on August 22, 2026. The institute has outlined measures based on an external inquiry committee's recommendations, including additional clinical psychologists, counsellors, visiting psychiatrists, formal re-entry protocols and an independent Student Grievance Ombudsperson. An external panel will also review the Mental Health Support System and Wellness Policy, while mandatory sensitisation workshops are planned for staff and faculty.
