After surviving Hurricane Irma as a child, 16-year-old Elise Raurell turned her experience into action by creating Storm Smart, a student-led hurricane preparedness programme. Developed as her Girl Scout Gold Award project, the initiative teaches children how to prepare for, stay safe during and recover after hurricanes through peer-to-peer learning. Having already reached nearly 500 students, Storm Smart aims to fill a critical gap in school education while empowering young people to protect themselves and their communities.
